This is the story of David Marshall 'Marsh' Williams (James Stewart), the real life inventor of the world-famous M-1 Carbine automatic rifle used in WWII. It all started when Marsh, who was one to do things his way, was caught distilling moonshine, and was accused and convicted of shooting a federal officer in the process. This at first placed him in the chain gang, which labeled him as a hard case. Later, to make room for those more deserving, he was moved to a prison farm, where he came under the direction of Captain H.T. Peoples (Wendell Corey). The Captain was a mild-mannered warden, who did not shy from discipline when necessary, but also believed that given the opportunity, most men will respond to good. Believing that Marsh was just such a person, the Captain gave him every opportunity to reform, so much so, that he eventually allowed Marsh to work in the tool shop in his spare time to develop and build by hand, a working rifle, inside the prison farm itself.
C'est l'histoire de David Marshall 'Marsh' Williams (James Stewart), l'inventeur réel du célèbre Fusil automatique M-1 Carbine utilisé pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Tout a commencé lorsque Marsh, qui faisait les choses à sa manière, a été surpris distillant du clair de lune, et a été accusé et reconnu coupable d'avoir tiré sur un officier fédéral dans le processus. Cela le plaça d'abord dans le gang de la chaîne qui l'a qualifié de cas difficile. Plus tard, pour faire place aux plus méritants, il fut muté à une ferme pénitentiaire, où il est venu sous la direction du capitaine H.T. Peuples (Wendell Corey). Croyant que Marsh était une telle personne, le capitaine lui a donné toutes les chances réformer, à tel point qu'il a finalement autorisé Marsh à travailler dans l'atelier d'outillage pendant son temps libre pour développer et construire à la main, un fusil de travail, à l'intérieur de la ferme de la prison elle-même.
