Investigations proceed as normal, but when Max sees Sherry fighting for her life in intensive care, something snaps. Getting the rapist becomes an obsession that eventually costs him his marriage, and a lot more besides.  Clues lead to the arrest of Cal Harper, a free spirited young man with a sharp tongue. In the heat of the moment while questioning Cal, Max vents his anger and is demoted for police misconduct. Max's frustration is compounded when Cal escapes from the courtroom with the help of Suzie, the beautiful young assistant to his shyster defense lawyer.
