Theresa Dunn, a young woman living in New York City, leads something of a "double life": by day she is a devoted deaf school teacher, but by night she cruises singles bars. Theresa pursues the likes of Tony (Richard Gere), whose threatening knife and swagger excite her. Theresa indulges in increasingly dangerous encounters, putting her life at risk. Eventually, just as she's trying to make a new start. Her lifestyle catches up with terrible, fatal consequences.
