In a tough old copper-belt mining town like Globe, Arizona, adultery with a rich man’s wife is still the fourth deadly sin. The psychotically savage dismemberment of four wealthy women in Arizona’s Valley of the Sun constitutes such a series. As Phoenix and Tucson homicide detectives converge on Globe, way up there in the shadow of the Apache Mountains, Joan White wakes up to a nightmare. Is the man she loves, the father of her kooky nine-year-old daughter, a schizophrenic killer? Or is a trap closing inexorably on this cheerful family? A trap Paul maybe laid himself back in ’76 when he fooled with a Beretta .380 pistol and another man's girl, Joan, a girl from New York’s mean streets, a girl with a past. Paul is a big, tough, young fellow. He loves Joan, and his daughter and music, and builds high-price audio systems for high-income customers. But now the pressure is on. Now the malevolent jaws of the trap are inexorably closing on him. Now Paul White will crack. And as the crack widens like a great wound, Joan White peers into it, a crack in the wall of reality. And in there, she sees something unspeakable. Now it turns. Now she recognizes it. Now it is looking at her. The Apaches had a name for it: White of the Eye.
